| Safety evaluation of magnetic resonance imaging during pregnancy |

Abstract The use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) during pregnancy is increasing because it provides high-quality cross-sectional anatomical and pathological descriptions without ionizing radiation. MRI is commonly used to evaluate the situations of acute abdominal and pelvic pain, nervous system abnormalities, fetal/placental abnormalities, tumors, infections, and/or cardiovascular abnormalities of the pregnant women. However, to date, the understanding of the safety of MRI during pregnancy, particularly regarding the administration of gadolinium based contrast agent (GBCA), which is capable of crossing the placental barrier, remains limited, raising the concerns about the possible negative effects on the health of the mother and fetus. Therefore, this paper reviews the safety of MRI and GBCA application during pregnancy at home and abroad, as well as the recommendations of current social guidelines, so as to provide some references for the application and correct understanding of MRI during pregnancy.
