Abstract Objective: To explore the short-term effects of low dose of nitrite sodium on male reproduction. Methods: SPF Kunming mice were randomly divided into normal group, background group, low-dose group, middle-dose and high-dose group. The weight of main organs was measured and organ coefficient was calculated. Sperm count, sperm survival rate, sperm activity were analyzed. Results: compared with the normal group, organ coefficient of liver and spleen increased significantly, the epididymis coefficient decreased, sperm count and sperm activity decreased significantly. The ratio of C grade sperm decreased significantly, but the ratio of A , B grade sperm did not changed obviously. Compared with the normal group, testis with nitrite exposure was damaged at different degree. Conclusion: The short-term exposure of nitrite sodium would lead to liver, spleen and epididymis damage. The sperm count and sperm activity decrease with increasing dose of nitrite sodium. Low-dose and short-term nitrite sodium exposure can damage the reproductive function of male mice.
