Investigation of knowledge, attitude, practice (KAP) and demand of reproductive health consultation in reproductive health promotion project of Shanxi Province |

Abstract To investigate the knowledge, attitude, practice (KAP), and demand of reproductive health service staffs in Shanxi Province, and to provide evidence for improving reproductive health counseling services. Methods: From Apr.2016 to Aug.2016, convenient sampling method was used to select the reproductive health service staffs from the family planning service stations of the pilot areas of reproductive health promotion project in Shanxi Province. Results: 1500 questionnaires were issued, and 1480 valid questionnaires were collected finally. There was significant different in the rate of correct answered reproductive health related knowledge (P<0.05) among people with different gender, age and working years. The correct rates of the knowledge of health promotion, sexually transmitted disease, and family planning/ prenatal and postnatal care were 75.7%, 75.4%, and 72.3%, respectively. The results of multiple linear regression showed that female, young, and long years worked in reproductive health services had higher score for reproductive health knowledge. 37.4% of respondents believed that it was necessary to carry out reproductive health counseling services. The top three categories of counseling services that could be provided were maternal and child health care (88.3%), adolescent health care (87.8%), and family planning/contraceptive services (86.1%). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the attitude of reproductive health counseling services was related to age (P=0.009) or working time (P=0.002), and the reproductive health counseling services were related to age, education, working hours, and gender (P<0.001). The top three helps of service providers hoped to receive were personnel training (72.6%), leadership attention (61.4%), and the need for advocacy for reproductive health counseling (61.3%). Conclusion: The knowledge level of reproductive health service providers in Shanxi province is uneven, both of attitudes and behaviors for providing reproductive health counseling services need to be improved. The professional knowledge training for providers should be focused on, reproductive health counseling services should be strengthen, and the level of reproductive health counseling provide should be further improved by the service stations.
