Abstract Objective: To investigate the awareness and its influencing factors of folic acid among women of reproductive age in rural areas of Gansu Province after the implement of 'free folic acid policy'. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted among 804 women aged 18 to 45 years. The respondents were recruited in rural areas of Gansu Province with clustering sampling. The database was established with Epidata3.0, and the statistics was analyzed by SPSS21. Results: The awareness rate of neural tube defects and folic acid were 9.0% and 37.4%, respectively. Age and checkup at medical institutions during peri-conception were associated with the awareness of folic acid among rural women of reproductive age. Conclusion: Poor awareness of folic acid is found among women of reproductive age in rural areas of Gansu Province. It is important to enhance the awareness of neural tube defects and folic acid in rural areas lack of resources by promoting the health education for focus group and improving the rationality and diversity of propaganda.
