Abstract Assisted reproductive technology (ART) is currently the main method for treating the infertility patients, but its adverse effects on the development of the placenta of the patients with pregnancy after ART is worthy to attention and discussion. In recent years, more and more studies have shown that ART may have an impact on the epigenetic regulation of the placenta, and thus can lead to the adverse pregnancy outcomes. The environment of the in vivo and in vitro processes of ART differ from that of the natural pregnancy, which may lead to the placental epigenetic abnormalities, including the DNA hypomethylation, the abnormal histone modification, the expression dysregulation of the imprinted genes, the interference with chromatin remodeling process and the abnormal expression of non-coding RNA, and so on. This article reviews the influence of ART on the placental epigenetic regulation and development.
