Abstract To explore the influencing factors of birth interval in Chinese women of childbearing age. Methods: A total of 60 hospitals were selected from 15 provinces and autonomous regions in the eastern, central and western regions of China. 300 postpartum women who delivered a live birth at the participating hospitals between July 2015 to June 2016 were randomly selected by systematic random sampling approach. Information on women’s demographic characteristics, delivery time, delivery method, previous pregnancy history, previous contraceptive history, etc., was analyzed. Women who had two or more children were selected for birth interval analysis based on their latest two births. Multivariable linear regression model was used to explore the potential associated influencing factors of the birth interval. Results: The average duration of the birth interval in the participants from 2015 to 2016 was 65.0±44.4 months. The results of multivariable linear regression analysis showed that birth interval in Chinese women who delivered a baby during 2015 and 2016 increased with the increase of the maternal age and the frequency of previous induced abortion, and the decreased with the women’s education level and the number of sons/daughters. Moreover, compared with vaginal delivery, cesarean section was associated with a longer birth interval. Han women had a longer birth interval than that of the minority women. Conclusion: The average birth interval was 65 months in the women who delivered a live birth in China in 2015-2016. This birth interval of the women was related to their age at delivery, their education level, their frequency of previous induced abortion, their number of children, and their mode of delivery. The health education of the puerpera in China should be strengthen. The puerpera who want a more child should be encouraged their birth interval in 24 to 60 months so as to reduce the potential risks of the adverse pregnant outcomes.
