Abstract Objective: To retrieve the existing official accounts in WeChat on family planning and reproductive health, to analyze and evaluate their functions and contents for providing evidences of preventing unintended pregnancy. Methods: The official accounts in WeChat were searched by search engines in WeChat and Sogou, and were recommendated by peer reviewers. There were 103 official accounts in WeChat included finally. The provision of methods for pregnancy prevention was appraised in four domains including provision on pregnancy prevention best practice, information on contraceptive birth control, and the related clinical or referral service, interaction with users, and original information. The dissemination capability of each official account in WeChat was estimated by the WeChat communication index (WCI) from the GXDATA website. Results: Among the 103 official accounts in WeChat, there were 66 (64.08%) official accounts registered by institutions, and nearly 70% official accounts were active for less than 3 years. The top primary purpose of these official accounts was contraceptive/SRH knowledge dissemination or drug distribution. The main resort for pregnancy prevention was knowledge dissemination, but there were no specific and systematic modules for dissemination. Almost half of the official accounts had less than 100 tweets in total, and 64.08% official accounts provided emergency contraception information as the best practice for pregnancy prevention, and less than 20% of them provided other information or services. Conclusion: The method for preventing unwanted pregnancy by official accounts in WeChat is single, which also has the low proportion of counseling and referral services, and has low dissemination capability.
