Abstract To develop a new stereoscopic intrauterine device (SIUD) for rhesus macaque, and to further provide the new contraception and experimental data for women birth control. Methods: The stent of rhesus macaque SIUD was heart-shaped or inverted pear-shaped, and was made from nickel-titanium memory alloy wires and was covered the layer of silicone rubber. The shape of SIUD was designed as three-dimensional network structure. Adult male rhesus macaques were selected and divided into SIUD experimental group (n=9) and control group (n=9). The entire male rhesus macaques were measured their uterus and ovary after laparotomy. And after laparotomy, the SIUD was inserted into the exposed uterus of rhesus macaques in SIUD experimental group. Results:, In experimental group, nine monkeys were successfully inserted a SIUD through uterine bottom puncture, and only one monkey’s SIUD was expulsed and became pregnant (11.1%, 1/9) after 3 months. 9 monkeys in control all became pregnant (P=18.452, t=0.000). Conclusion: The shape of uterus of rhesus macaque is similar to that of human beings, so rhesus macaque is a good animal model for the development of new SIUD. Rhesus monkey SIUD has good contraceptive effects.
